- Day 1–2Windhoek → Sesriem
Provision in Windhoek, drive the C24/C19 to Sesriem, camp inside the park gate for the pre-dawn dune run.
- Day 3Sossusvlei & Deadvlei
Gate opens at sunrise. Big Daddy first, Deadvlei in the flat early light, Sesriem Canyon in the afternoon.
- Day 4–5D707 → Swakopmund
The most photogenic gravel road in the country, then the Atlantic fog belt and a night of seafood in Swakopmund.
- Day 6Skeleton Coast & Cape Cross
Shipwrecks, salt road and the seal colony. Fuel at Henties Bay — the next reliable station is far.
- Day 7–8Spitzkoppe
Granite inselbergs, rock arch at sunset, and some of the darkest measured skies on earth for astrophotography.
- Day 9–12Etosha
Okaukuejo and Halali waterholes. Dry-season game concentrates predictably; dawn and dusk are the only sessions that matter.
- Day 13–14Return via Waterberg
Break the drive back to Windhoek at Waterberg Plateau, then return the vehicle with a fuel and tyre buffer.
What it takes, and what it costs.
Fly into Hosea Kutako International (WDH) via Johannesburg, Frankfurt or Doha. Collect the 4x4 in Windhoek the same morning — most rental yards open at 07:00 and the first leg to Sesriem takes five hours.
MTC prepaid SIM at the airport covers towns and main roads. Expect zero signal between Sesriem and Solitaire and across most of the Skeleton Coast — download offline maps before leaving Windhoek.

What explorers ask before Namibia.
For Sossusvlei's last 5 km and the D707, yes. A 2WD can do a reduced loop but you will forfeit the best routes.
Yes. The main risk is speed on gravel — keep to 80 km/h and never drive after dark.
Sesriem and Etosha camps sell out six to nine months ahead for the dry season.
Outside national parks and with NCAA authorisation. Park flights without a permit carry equipment confiscation.
What the brochures leave out.
- Book a 4x4 with two spare tyres — punctures are the #1 trip breaker.
- Fuel every time you see a station; gaps reach 250 km.
- Park entry permits are cash-friendly but bring Namibian dollars.
